Stop 2: The Gathering Gardens
The Gathering Garden was designed to emit a tropical feel. The plants that surround this garden include lavish perennials, vibrant annuals, and most importantly hardy palms. The hardy palms of the gathering Garden are different than the typical palms that you would think of when you think of tropical places. The various types of hardy palms planted here are actually able to withstand colder temperatures up to -5°F.
Question:
Grade Level: 4th
The garden is shaped like a circle and is clearly divided into fourths by the dark bricks. The circle is also divided into eighths if you see the thinner, lighter grey lines that cut each four in half. Two separate classes took a field trip to the arboretum and meant in the Gathering Garden before entering. The first class took up 2/4 of the circle while the second class took up 4/8 of the circle. Which class took up more of the circle? Explain your reasoning.
Directions to Stop 3:
To get to the next stop, walk straight out of the Gathering Garden back towards to Cooperative Extension Office. Right before you get to the wall of the building, make a right and take about 5 to 7 steps to arrive at Stop 3.
Standard:
4.NOF.1Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
